If you survived, come relay!

It is said that every minute of every day, someone in the United States loses their life in the battle against cancer. What we often fail to recognize is how often people survive the disease.

On July 12-13, the Lake Oswego Relay for Life will take over LOHS stadium and celebrate survivors with an overnight fundraiser for the American Cancer Society. Funds raised will go to patient programs and cancer research.

Cancer survivors will be honored at the start of relay. As they walk a portion of the track, participants will cheer for them to honor their fight against the disease that they have so bravely overcome.

The theme for our relay is “Carnival for a Cure.” This year, we’ve added a Glow Fun Run 5K at 9 p.m. There will also be live music, booths with games, food and much more. For more information or to register, go to http://bit.ly/1kjYpRZ.

Each and every one of us has been touched by cancer in some way, whether a family member, colleague, teacher or friend. Maybe it was you. Come and take part in this life-changing event, where we will celebrate those who are winning the battle against cancer, remember those who have lost their lives and fight back to eliminate the disease for good.

Birdhouse

Chickadees have moved

Into a birdhouse on the porch.

All day they ferry in sustenance

Like keepers of a sacred flame.

Their own and singular name

Repeats from the pine tree,

As eloquent and sharp as eggshells.

Not to be missed

On Sunday, May 18, I joined a group of people for the “Blockbuster — A Walking Tour of Historic Downtown Commercial Buildings” offered by the Lake Oswego Preservation Society.  I highly recommend it. I will always look at the buildings we viewed with a new and better eye.  I learned so much interesting information about our city core!

You will find upcoming walks (which will meet at Sundeleaf Plaza on July 12 and July 20) listed in the Lake Oswego Parks and Recreation Activities Guide and online at www.lakeoswegoparks.org.
