Sex-trafficking affects all communities

Soroptimist International of Lake Oswego/West Linn applaud the West Linn Tidings’ recent opinion (Aug. 8) educating the local community about the serious threat of the child sex trade industry, brought to light in a recently published PSU study.

“This scourge is not confined to the city of Portland or Multnomah County. Like homelessness, domestic abuse and so many other regional concerns, it is a problem that spills across jurisdictional boundaries, including into Clackamas County.”

Although it appears the average metro-area resident may not be affected by child sex-trafficking, we agree the PSU study provides shocking numbers supporting the reality of too many children, average age of 15, are reported victims of the sex-trafficking industry.

Soroptimist International is an international volunteer service organization working to improve lives of women and girls in local communities and throughout the world. Programs provide practical and sustainable solutions to some of society’s most entrenched problems such as illiteracy, domestic violence and sexual slavery/human trafficking. Since 1972 Soroptimist International has awarded over $25 million in grants helping thousands of women reclaim their dreams of a better life for themselves and their families. On a local level, the Lake Oswego/West Linn club is working to educate local residents of the existent problems and provide advocacy and funding support to local organizations working to help women and girls who are victims of domestic and sexual violence.

As part of local fundraising activities, all are invited to the third annual Soroptimist Harvest Festival on Saturday, Sept. 21, at Lee’s Berry Farms in Tualatin, from 3 to 9 p.m. For details and to pre-purchase tickets, contact Melinda Wittman at 503-347-8723.
