City of Lake Oswego gives Goodwill go-ahead

New retail and donation center can have driveway off Boones Ferry Road

by: SUBMITTED LOGO - A new Goodwill retail and donation center could be coming to Lake Oswego.Lake Oswego will give a new Goodwill retail and donation center the go-ahead, the city council decided Tuesday evening.

The council took up a delayed vote to overturn a previous Development Review Commission decision, which has delayed approval for a Goodwill Industries development at 17150 Boones Ferry Road since the beginning of the year.

On Jan. 6, the DRC rejected Goodwill’s request for a “hardship variance,” which would allow the organization to override city code prohibiting direct access points to arterial streets, such as Boones Ferry Road.

Goodwill Industries of the Columbia Willamette had argued that denying access to the property from Boones Ferry would cause economic hardship, traffic problems and safety issues, although the DRC and city staff found this would not be the case. The council ultimately sided with Goodwill in early March and finalized its decision Tuesday.

The council approved a 13-foot, one-way, entrance-only driveway off Boones Ferry Road to the Goodwill site. The city’s conditions for issuing a permit include minor adjustments to Goodwill’s development plans, including some structural alterations and covered bike parking spaces near the retail building.

The new Goodwill location will include a 6,415-square-foot retail building and a more than 1,050-square-foot donation center.
