Police investigate two bomb threats at LOJHS

The calls were deemed phony, police seeking suspect

Hamann An unknown suspect twice has called Lake Oswego Junior High School, requiring administrators to evacuate the building while Lake Oswego police investigated.

Sgt. Tom Hamann said he does not yet know the age or gender of the suspect or suspects whose calls prompted several LOPD officers to spend an hour at the school both times. One call came in at about 10:30 a.m. Jan. 14, and the other came in at 12:38 p.m. today (Jan. 24).

Police blocked the school’s main entrance to keep anyone from coming onto the property. No one was injured during the incidents, and students returned to class as usual.

The person who called last week was whispering, said Nancy Duin, Lake Oswego School District communications director.Duin

The last time Duin recalls a similar incident occurring was about a decade ago at Lakeridge High School when someone made several consecutive phony bomb threats.

“Eventually the police did find the perpetrator, and it was a student,” she said.

Hamann said it is best for police not to discuss investigation procedures, but officers are doing all that they can to find the perpetrator. If a suspect is arrested, he or she could be charged with disorderly conduct, a misdemeanor.

It is potentially dangerous for people to call in a fake bomb threat because students could get hurt during the evacuation and emergency officials could be injured when responding to the incident, Hamann said. Authorities also say time could be better spent on helping people who need it, he added.

“It’s a tremendous drain of resources,” Hamann said.

Police are asking that anyone with information call the nonemergency police line: 503-635-0238.
