School year kicks off in Lake Oswego

Hello pencils, hello books

by: VERN UYETAKE - Kekoa Linser-Lemke listens to instruction from his teacher on the first day of class for sixth-graders at Lake Oswego Junior High School. It’s the day a father lets go of his daughter’s hand when she arrives at her kindergarten classroom.

It’s the day a sixth-grader nervously steps into what seems like a huge junior high building where she has her own locker and so much more room to grow.

And, it’s the day a young man feels like throwing open the front door of his school and striding through it like he’s 10 feet tall, a senior at last.

It’s the time-honored, all-important first day of school, full of jitters, thrills and fresh experiences.

Tuesday was day one for sixth-graders, ninth-graders and half of each kindergarten class to give them all a chance to adjust to unfamiliar surroundings.

The other students settled into their new desks on Wednesday when the other half of the kindergarten crew enjoyed their chance to rule the classroom. Today, kindergarten classes will be full.

There were cheers, tears, fears, pressure from peers and teachers talking to eager ears. All the hubbub heralds in the first week of the 2013-14 school year.
