Friends of Kai asked to help

Funds requested for surgeries needed by popular police dog

Kai, the champion police dog who is a crook’s worst nightmare and a kid’s best friend, is set today to have the first of two surgeries he needs to repair the wear and tear he has received in the line of duty for the Lake Oswego Police Department K-9 Unit. The big German shepherd has two hernias and a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left rear leg.

“The injuries were diagnosed about a month ago,” said LOPD Sgt. Tom Hamann. “The veterinarian believes that Kai will be able to make a full recovery and serve the city of Lake Oswego for another two or three years.

“We expect that he will return to full duty approximately three to five months after his second surgery.”

But the surgeries will cost money. Hamann said the surgeries will cost $8,000, and the entire yearly budget for the LOPD K-9 Unit is $6,000. While police officers are not doing any fundraising for Kai, the public can come by police headquarters on the second floor of Lake Oswego City Hall to donate money for the K-9 program.

Kai has been a credit to Lake Oswego. The 8-year-old German shepherd, with his trainer Officer Bryan McMahon, has tracked down several suspects. Known for his “super nose,” Kai received wide recognition for tracking down a missing dementia patient in April of 2012.

Outside his regular police duties, Kai won the Top Dog award at the 2011 competition held by the Washington County Sheriff’s Department. Kai shined in the search competition. The triumph was even more remarkable because Kai and McMahon had been on a 5 a.m. search for a suspect earlier that very day.

However, in all of these heroics, Kai has suffered injuries from his years of rigorous training and service. His surgery today will be performed at Cascade Veterinary Clinic in Tigard. It is hoped Kai’s many fans will help him.

“Kai is always well received at his appearances,” Hamann said. “The public loves him!”
