Cars and boats, sun and fun

Attendance soars over 5,000 mark for 14th Oswego Heritage show

by: SUBMITTED - This 1951 Chrysler New Yorker looked beautiful in the afternoon sun at the Oswego Heritage Council's car show on Sunday. The kids with the clickers told the story.

They counted a new attendance record of more than 5,000 patrons attending the 14th Oswego Heritage Council Collector Car and Classic Boat Show this past weekend in Lake Oswego.

Jude Graham, executive director of the OHC, was exhausted on Monday. She put a pedometer on herself and it showed that she walked 11 miles on Sunday alone. But she was very happy about what she called the most successful car-boat classic ever.

“It was absolutely amazing,” Graham said.

The number of cars displayed pushed up near the 325 mark, another new record.

“It was probably the largest show we’ve ever had,” said Bill Warner, who has been car show emcee ever since its inception. “There were many cars we had never seen here before.”

The car award ceremony was a cheerful affair. A family of osprey, whose home was on a nearby power pole at George Rogers Park, chirped during the entire presentation.

“A lot of cars won that you wouldn’t have expected to win,” Graham noted.

On the previous day the fourth annual vintage water ski show was held on Lakewood Bay. Mayor Kent Studebaker made history by becoming the first Lake Oswego mayor to perform in a water ski show, and Joel Van Rysselberghe succeeded the iconic Gary Lord as the water-skiing bunny. The Polka Dot Express, a team of glamorous water-skiing women, spelled out OSWEGO. Lita Grigg carried the S flag, just as she did as a girl in the 1950s. Other Polka Dotters were Ruthie White, Janet Van Rysselberghe, Shawn Engelberg, Sandi Swinford and Karen Destefano. Other water ski performers were Steve Kaer and Larry Connor.

Many people came in for kudos from Graham, including Mother Nature, which provided two days of beautiful weather for the event. Graham gave a special nod to sponsors Vic Keeler and Bobby Pierce, who epitomized the kind of support that has made the show so successful — and free.

“We have 60 local businesses who help sponsor this thing,” Graham said. “They are the ones who let this be a free show for the people of Lake Oswego.”
