Lakeridge's nonranking with U.S. News & World Report proves puzzling to district

LOHS ranked second in the state

Lakeridge High School did not get a ranking in the U.S. News & World Report’s latest high school rankings — and Lake Oswego High School rose three slots to second in the state.

Yet, based on Lakeridge’s standardized test scores, Lake Oswego School District officials said it should be ranked along with its sister school. The district has launched an investigation into the matter.

U.S. News & World Report has named Lakeridge High as a Silver Medal School for the past three years. Lake Oswego High is one of three Oregon high schools listed as Gold Medal Schools this year.

Some ranking data appears to be missing from Lakeridge’s entry online.

The report ranks schools by state assessment results for reading and math, state assessment results for reading and math for disadvantaged students subgroups and a college readiness index weighing participation and performance in advanced placement and international baccalaureate exams. The testing data for the 2013 rankings comes from the 2010-11 school year.

In Lakeridge’s entry on the U.S. News list, math proficiency and reading proficiency each have “N/A” next to them. Under national rank is a single word: “unranked.”

“Given the continued high student performance at LHS, district staff is investigating the reason for this omission and has contacted both U.S. News & World Report and the Oregon Department of Education,” said Nancy Duin, school district spokeswoman.

The state Department of Education provides state assessment scores to U.S. News & World Report.

“The district has made inquiries to ascertain if any errors were made with data submission,” Duin said. “Lakeridge High School state assessment scores for 2010-11 were among the highest in the school’s history, and were higher than those at LOHS.”

U.S. News & World Report assesses more than 21,000 public high schools across the country.
