LOSD IT Director Jeff Kelso settles in Hermiston on 'the drier side of the state'

KELSOLake Oswego School District's director of computer and network services left the district in May for a position at the Hermiston School District.

Jeff Kelso, who'd worked in the LOSD for almost 15 years, oversaw the Information Technology Department. He left for a position as the technology manager at Hermiston School District (about 30 miles northwest of Pendleton), where he started May 15.

"The last six weeks have been a whirlwind," he told The Review last week.

Kelso's position had not yet been filled as of press time.

"I'd decided to start looking to see what other opportunities existed around the state in K-12 IT in late February and happened upon the technology manager position here in Hermiston in March," he said. "I applied, came out for an interview in April, and they made me an excellent offer. Hermiston S.D. is the second-fastest growing district in the state."

Kelso earned his Master of Business Administration from Portland State University in 2003 and received his Bachelor of Science in computer science, minoring in business administration, from Western Oregon University. He held a variety of engineering jobs, mostly in the Portland area, before landing at the Lake Oswego School District in August 2002.

Before accepting the Hermiston job, he said he talked it over with his wife and kids, and they decided that he "should take advantage of the opportunity to move to the drier side of the state," Kelso said.

Last week, in his second week on the job, he said the people he'd met had been friendly and welcoming, so he was doing well. But it's not to say he doesn't miss those he got to know at his old stomping grounds.

"I loved my time at LOSD, and I'll always value the many friendships I made while working there," Kelso said. "It's a great district filled with great people, and I wish them all the best!"
