LOHS team wins third at National Ocean Sciences Bowl event
Lake Oswego High School brought three National Ocean Sciences Bowl teams to the Regional Salmon Bowl on Feb. 18 at Oregon State University.
This was the second year for the group, which Sarah Kwartler, currently a senior, founded in 2015. The entire group is coached by LOHS science teacher Jeff Goodrich.
The teams spent the day competing in a quiz bowl format, answering marine science questions covering biology, chemistry, physical oceanography, geology, technology, marine policy, geography and social sciences.
The underdog A team (Captain Sarah Kwartler, Elena Lee, Matthew Seeley, Max Nguyen and Kali Drango), which came from behind to beat the former national champions from Boise, won third place in the region and an invitation to tour the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration's fleet in Newport.
The B team (Sam Doby, Jeya Anandakumar, Kate Fayloga, Xiao O. Guan and Mitchell Weiss) ended up competing against the C team (Kevin Pataroque, David Park, Hoshaiah Long, Lillian Harwood and Mesa Tinger). The B team won ninth place, and the C team won eighth place.
