4 Lake Oswego youths become Eagle Scouts

The boys were recently honored for their service projects


Four young Lake Oswegans recently have earned the highest honor offered by the Boy Scouts of America: the Eagle Scout Award.

Mitchell Bernards, Gregory Conan, John McCarthy and Elliott Steck all have obtained the rank.Mitchell Bernards

Bernards, a Lake Oswego High School senior, is a member of Boy Scout Troop 221, and, in his scouting career, has taken a trek at Philmont Scout Ranch, took a leadership position with his Order of the Arrow chapter and attended the 2013 National Jamboree. His Eagle Scout Service Project was designing and coordinating the installation of steps on a hiking trail in Tryon Creek State Park. Conan, a Lakeridge High School senior, is a member of Boy Scout Troop 127, and, in his scouting career, Greg took a trek at Philmont Scout Ranch and held leadership positions such as Webmaster and Assistant Senior Patrol Leader. His Eagle Scout project was planning and managing the construction of a bandstand for the Lakeridge Pacer Band. McCarthy, a freshmen at Jesuit High School, is a member of Boy Scout Troop 432, and his project was constructing a paved area and privacy fence for the Lake Oswego Municipal Golf Course. In his scouting career, he held several leadership positions, such as Patrol Leader, Den Chief, and Troop Guide. He is a member of Our Lady of the Lake Church, and is an active member at the robotics team at Jesuit High, said his dad, Brian McCarthy.

Elliott Steck Steck, a junior at Thomas Edison High School in Portland, is a member of Boy Scout Troop 432 in Lake Grove. Steck’s project involved reducing the spread of garlic mustard by adding boot scrapers to four Springbrook Park entrances, accompanied by colored panels with information and photos. Steck raised $850 to buy the materials with support from the community. Steck is active on the dive team at Thomas Edison, said Paul Lyons, Friends of Springbrook Park founding and current board member.
