At a ceremony last week, 66 students were inducted into the 85-year-old group that has chapters in all 50 states. School employees honored the inductees before the students’ friends and family, handing the students a certificate celebrating their academic commitment and volunteerism.

“I think it’s an honor to be one of the first, and I’m proud of my accomplishments and to be a part of it,” said Rowan Anderson, an eighth-grader.

To be a member, a student must have a 3.0 GPA or higher, perform community service and demonstrate leadership skills, good character and citizenship.

“I like field trips and doing stuff for others,” said Cal Motylewski, an eighth-grader. “It’s just fun to do.”

Sixth-grade counselor Carrie Trullinger, chapter adviser, said the chapter reinforces the values and standards that are important to the school, such as high academic achievement, inclusivity and participation.

“I think that’s what NJHS is about: It takes things kids are doing inside of school and outside of school and makes them important and recognizes them,” Trullinger said.

Principal Robert Caplinger said he decided to apply to get a chapter to recognize all the good that his students do. Participation in the group is a boon to students, who also learn a good deal via the application process, Caplinger added.

“It prepares them for high school; it prepares them for college applications; it prepares them for scholarship applications,” he said.
