Education Heroes: Mary Kaer

KaerMary Kaer for the past five years has presented a report during Lake Oswego School Board meetings about who’s joining or leaving the school district, but her last presentation was a little different.

At the board’s March 10 meeting, Kaer read her own name on the list — in the retirements category. She has served in the field of education for 33 years, since 2004 in Lake Oswego, and for the past five years as the executive director of human resources. She also has served as principal of Oak Creek Elementary School, and for more than 20 years, she worked in Portland, where she grew up.

“She was one of the highest rated principals in Portland, and she did a great job here and is a class act,” Lake Oswego Superintendent Bill Korach said.

Her retirement is effective Aug. 1, and the Lake Oswego resident said she’s looking forward to spending more time with her husband of 32 years, Steven Kaer, and their 11-year-old daughter, Emma.

“Although I have loved every aspect of my 30-plus year career, I will particularly miss working with the exemplary Lake Oswego staff,” Kaer said. “What I am looking forward to the most is having a more flexible schedule. I have worked year-round for many years and will especially enjoy having more free time during the lovely Lake Oswego summers.”

With this occasional series, we’ll be spotlighting members of the education community. To nominate someone, email Jillian Daley at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. .
