Dogs to get scrubbed for a good cause

Vet-tech students sponsor wash in Lake Oswego to fund legacy project at PCC

by: SUBMITTED - Karma, a yellow Labrador retriever, enjoys a bath provided by student Chris Green at Portland Community College's Veterinary Technology program's kennel on the Rock Creek campus.Portland Community College students will host a dog wash at Lexi Dog Boutique & Social Club in Lake Oswego this month.

The event, scheduled for 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Sept. 21, will raise money for the students’ legacy project in PCC’s Veterinary Technology program. The recommended donation is $5 for small, $10 for medium and $15 for large dogs.

Pups of all breeds and sizes are welcome as long as they are social, enjoy being bathed and are not aggressive.

Students will help the dogs get acclimated to the water and then wash and massage their tails, legs, necks and bodies. After a thorough rinse, the dogs will be toweled off or blow-dried.

The fundraiser at Lexi Dog, 366 Third St., not only benefits the customer and dog but also serves as a key training event for PCC students.

“Students can’t wait to apply what they’ve learned in class,” said Dolores Galindo, instructional support technician for the program.

The funds that are raised from the doggie wash help pay for a legacy project, which typically takes the form of an equipment purchase to benefit the vet-tech program or assistance in community service projects for animal-related nonprofit organizations. For example, the class of 2010 used the money they raised to buy 10 dog beds for animals the vet-tech program houses in its kennel on PCC’s Rock Creek campus. Last year, students purchased a bathing system to make it easier and more efficient to wash the dogs at that facility.

“Typically they are things that need to be purchased because our program budget only goes so far,” Galindo said.
