Dance-a-Thon raises funds for Westridge playground

“Bold” was the watchword for footwear at the Westridge Elementary School Silly Sock Dance-a-Thon last week. Students boogied to raise dollars for the Westridge Elementary School playground, a project organizers aim to kick off this summer. The children’s efforts brought in almost $5,930, said Westridge parent Gayle Mickey.

Plans for the $335,600 project include a new play structure, outdoor amphitheater, artificial turf, rubberized play surface, ball wall, basketball hoop, a grove and a tent for the rainy season. There also will be improved drainage.

A district study deemed portions of the play structure to be hazardous, and there is flooding during the rainy season, said Analeis Weidlich, co-president of the Westridge Parent Teacher Student Organization. The PTSO has gotten a matching grant and is seeking local partnerships.

Other fundraisers for the project include an ongoing personalized bricks and benches sale. A brick is $125, $250 or $500 depending on the size and content. The bricks will be fashioned into two trails along the playground. A legacy bench with a plaque is $3,000, commemorating a loved one and offering a place for parents, teachers and, possibly, tired children to rest.
