The Art in the Pearl Fine Arts and Crafts Festival will be held Aug. 30, 31 and Sept. 1 in Portland’s North Park Blocks. More than 75,000 people attend the event and enjoy shopping for art, listening to music and eating a wide variety of foods available from vendors.

Now in its 18th year, Art in the Pearl is considered one of the top five art festivals in the nation and attracts artists from the United States and Canada. Hundreds of artists apply for the coveted 130 booths that are visited by not only first-time art fans but experienced art collectors.

Art education has been an integral part of Art in the Pearl since its inception. The Hands-On Art Pavilion is a user-friendly learning environment for kids and adults with art and craft projects directed by experienced artists and art educators. In the demonstrations area, professional artists and craftspeople demonstrate, explain and discuss their creative processes as if they were working in their own studio. Unique performance artists can be seen on the World Music Stage.

Publicity chairwoman and West Linn artist Ann Munson said that in past years many artists applied to both Art in the Pearl and the Sausalito (Calif.) Art Festival, both of which take place during Labor Day weekend.

“They would choose to show in Sausalito if they were accepted. But that has changed,” she said. “Artists are choosing first to come to Art in the Pearl. It’s going to be an amazing assortment of art and artists.”

Joining Munson at Art in the Pearl is another West Linn artist, Mike Bagetta.

Art in the Pearl takes place on Northwest Eighth Avenue, between West Burnside and Northwest Glisan in Portland’s Pearl District. Admission is free. Hours are Saturday and Sunday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Monday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
