Concerts still ringing out the sounds

This week's free concerts and other entertainment

by: SUBMITTED PHOTO - The Shanghai Woolies will play Sunday at Millennium Plaza Park as part of the Moonlight and Music concert series.

Summer outdoor concerts in local parks are still pouring music into the open air, so pack your picnic, blankets or low sand chairs and head out to enjoy free entertainment. Outdoor movies and plays are also part of the fun. This week’s lineup includes:

July 31

West Linn’s Music in the Park series continues with Soulmates featuring Jay Bird Koder, 6:30 p.m., Tanner Creek Park, 3456 Parker Road, West Linn.

Drawing from a deep well of seemingly infinite artistry, Soulmates will fill the park with its musical message of love, peace and soul. This is true music magic.

The Music in the Park concert on Aug. 7 will feature Hit Machine, a four-piece band that plays hits from the ’70s and ’80s — same place, same time.

Aug. 1, 2 and 3

“The Would-Be Gentleman”: Masque Alfresco will perform Moliere’s Commedia dell’arte satire at 7 p.m. at George Rogers Park, 611 S. State St. in Lake Oswego, on the lawn in front of the iron foundry. Admission is free, though the hat will be passed at the end of the show to defray expenses.

The show continues Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings through Aug. 24. This is appropriate for the whole family.

Aug. 2

Summer on the Green (6 p.m. at the Lajos Balogh Performance Shell on the Marylhurst University campus) features Shakespeare-in-the-Park’s performance of “Midsummer Night’s Dream” by the Portland Actors Ensemble.

Aug. 3

Moonlight and Music (6 p.m. at Millennium Plaza Park) features The Shanghai Woolies. This eight-piece ensemble plays jazz and pop from the 1920s and ’30s. Created by Pink Martini trumpeter Gavin Bondy, this group combines the romance of Louie Armstrong, the mystery of Duke Ellington, the whimsy of Paul Whiteman and the swing of Benny Goodman.

Big Night Out will rock Westlake Park when the Sounds of Summer concert series moves to that park on Wednesday.

Aug. 6

Sounds of Summer (7 p.m. at Westlake Park, 14165 Bunick Drive, Lake Oswego) features Big Night Out. Big Night Out is a high-energy rock, pop and funk band playing songs from the 1960s to the present.

Movies in the Park

Aug. 1

West Linn’s Movies in the Park series continues with a screening at 8:30 p.m. of “Despicable Me 2” at Marylhurst Heights Park, 1800 Valley View Drive, West Linn.

Aug. 7

“The Karate Kid-2010,” rated PG, will be shown during Lake Oswego’s Movies in the Park at Millennium Plaza Park. Bring blankets, pillows and low sand chairs. Show starts at dusk, approximately 8:30 to 9 p.m. Come early for the best seating.
