PYP will wrap up its 90th season in style

The Portland Youth Philharmonic and Musical Director David Hattner will present a spring concert at 4 p.m. May 4 in the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall, 1037 SW Broadway in Portland.

Several local youth play with PYP, including Logan Bryck, Timmy Chung, Talia Dugan, Daniel Fu, Samuel Fu, Luke Harju, Maia Lee, Chelsea C. Lin, Eaton Lin, Sunny Oh, Kristin Qian, Daniel Tang, Paige Towsey and Dorothy Wang.

The concert will open with Brahm’s “Academic Festival Overture,” his musical “thank you” to the University of Breslau for awarding him with an honorary doctorate. Following the Brahms overture, 15-year-old double bassist Nicholas Arredondo and 16-year-old violinist Byron Fulop Laing, both soloist competition winners, will present solo performances.

Arredondo will perform Bottesini’s “Concerto No. 2.” He began his journey with PYP two years ago as a student in the organization’s free double bass class and has since become the philharmonic’s principal bass.

“As a jazz bassist, I had very little bowing or classical music experience,” Arredondo said. “When I found out about PYP’s free bass class, I signed up. Right away I was working with professional bassists form the Oregon Symphony. I received such high-quality instruction that I decided to prepare an audition for PYP.”

Laing will perform selections from Lalo’s “Symphonie Espagnole.” A winner of the 2014 MetroArts Young Artists Competition, Laing is in his third year with the philharmonic. He can often be found busking at local markets.

Following intermission, the philharmonic’s winds and percussion will take the stage to give the PYP premiere of Gustav Holst’s “Hammersmith.” The philharmonic will conclude its 90th anniversary season as it began, honoring its tradition of performing the works of American composers. The final work presented will be Samuel Barber’s “Symphony No. 1.”

Parents are encouraged to arrive at 3 p.m. to walk their children through an “instrument petting zoo” where they will have the opportunity to meet members of the PYP and try out various orchestral instrument.

Tickets range in price from $11 to $40 and can be purchased on portlandyouthphil.org or by phone at 503-223-5939.
