layover: new work at The Art Gym

The Art Gym at Marylhurst University is exhibiting layover: new work by Vanessa Renwick through May 17. The exhibit includes a single channel video installation of Vaux’s swifts in flight, a score by Sam Gomes and a mixed media light installation “the go-betweens” in which six of The Art Gym’s large multi-pane windows will be transformed into a different bird — a loon, a snowy owl, a raven, a woodpecker and a peregrine.

Renwick is known for her installations that combine video and sculpture, which create a unique viewing experience for viewers. Much of her work responds to the natural world and to specific places.

An accompanying publication will document the show and includes images of past works of video installations involving nature. It will feature an introduction by critic Randy Gragg and essay by author Jon Raymond.

The catalogue will be released May 4, adding to The Art Gym’s books and catalogues available as downloadable documents on the international library database WorldCat, accessible through the gallery’s website. The catalogue can also be purchased for $10.

Renwick’s work provides an unusual window on nature and wildlife, particularly in how visitors are involved — opening refrigerator doors to view wolves hunting or lying down on top of piles of wood to view forest.

For The Art Gym installation, the birds on the windows will be 12 feet high and a video of birds in flight will be projected onto a screen suspended above viewers.

The Art Gym at the university — 17600 Pacific Highway, Marylhurst — will be closed April 18 to 20.

A gallery talk will take place at 12:30 p.m. May 8.
