Librarian adds her book to library shelves

History of Mt. Hood National Forest published

Cheryl Hill

A new book will be on the shelf at the library, thanks to Cheryl Hill, reference librarian at the West Linn Public Library.

Hill has published her first book, “Mount Hood National Forest” in the Images of America series with Arcadia Publishing Co.

“I’ve been a hiker all my life,” said Hill. A native Oregonian, Hill’s family spent a great deal of time hiking in the Mt. Hood National Forest each summer. She is also a lifelong history buff, so putting the two interests together seemed to be an interesting project to undertake. Hill contacted Arcadia Publishing in September 2012 to see if they would be interested in the concept. They were, and gave her a year to write the book. From proposal to release date, the project took about a year and a half to complete.

“It took a full year, since I work full time,” she said.

And there were 10 boxes of old photos to go through at the U.S. National Forest office in Sandy. She spent 16 hours scanning about 350 photos in the collection, 200 of which appear in the book.

“Some were labeled. I researched every photo, looking for interesting stories. Fortunately I’m a librarian and I love to do research.”

Released Monday, the book is available at major book sellers including Barnes and Noble and Amazon.

“I have a huge sense of accomplishment, after all this time, I did it! It’s really exciting,” she said.

Hill will hold a book signing event at 3 p.m. April 5 at the Mount Hood Cultural Center and Museum located at 88900 Government Camp Loop, Government Camp, 97028. Learn about other signings and events at cherylhill.net.
