Will Vinton to premiere The Kiss at Lakewood

Claymation creator presents new musical

by: SUBMTTED PHOTO - Academy Award winner Will Vinton will present the first public presentation of The Kiss at Lakewood Center for the Arts March 24 and 25.

First Will Vinton gave the world Claymation. Now he’s created “The Kiss,” a new staged musical starring a frog that will be performed at 7:30 p.m. March 24 and 25 at Lakewood Center for the Arts, 368 S. State St. in Lake Oswego.

An edgy take on “The Frog Prince,” “The Kiss” is a modern fairy tale for grownups in classic Vinton style. Multi-platinum songwriter David Pomeranz’s music is the perfect complement to the world of whimsy Vinton has imagined — witty, memorable tunes performed by a cast of gifted musical theater stars. Rick Lewis directs the music with choreography by BodyVox artistic directors Jamey Hampton and Ashely Roland.

The story is of Arro, an arrogant prince with a problem he’s on a quest to solve. His odyssey is helped by a motherly beaver, but he’s hunted by a malevolent witch and her depraved rat henchman along the way. And the only person who can save Arro is a picky princess, who despises him. Really despises him.

“I really love this project,” Vinton said. “It’s an outrageous musical comedy with larger than life characters, stunning magical effects and amazing songs. I can’t wait to bring our story to the stage at Lakewood Center for the Arts.”

Pomeranz is equally delighted at the opportunity to meld his music with Vinton’s vision.

“Being involved with ‘The Kiss’ has been a unique and creative experience,” he said. “It’s a dream because I get to work with the wildly imaginative Will Vinton — someone I’ve been a fan of for many years. The show is entertaining, moving and absolutely hilarious. You’ve got all these incredible animated effects that you would expect from a feature. But no one’s ever seen these things on a stage before.”

“The Kiss” will see its first public production on the Lakewood Center’s stage.

“It is a distinct honor for Lakewood Theatre Company to work with Will Vinton and company to be part of ‘The Kiss’ creative process,” said Andrew Edwards, Lakewood executive director. LTC has a long tradition of supporting original work and describes this locally grown project as “clever, well written” with “fabulous music and a unique twist on a favorite story.”

“We’ve created something pretty special here,” Vinton said. “And we think audiences are going to fall in love with ‘The Kiss.’”

Tickets are $30 for general admission and $125 for a VIP honorary producer ticket, which includes an after performance party with producers and cast plus “The Kiss” supporter package of music, autographed artwork and more items.
