Jenks returns to the stage

Two concerts are planned before NW and international tours begin

by: SUBMITTED PHOTO - William Jenks, guitarist and founder of Portland Classic Guitar, will present two concerts at Wiegand Hall on the Marylhurst University campus Feb. 21 and 22.

William Jenks, guitarist and proprietor of Portland Classic Guitar, will present back-to-back solo concerts at 8 p.m. Feb. 21 and 22 at Wiegand Hall on the Marylhurst University campus.

Jenks is known among the international classic guitar community, both for his artistry and for his concert series, the only series of its kind on the West Coast.

He is returning to the stage after making a full recovery from a motor vehicle accident. He will perform the complete “First Lute Suite” by J.S. Bach, preludes by Villa Lobos, three Renaissance pieces by John Dowland and Luis Milan and some favorite works from the Spanish guitar tradition, including “Asturias” by Isaac Albeniz.

The Wiegand Hall concerts kick off a Northwest tour, which will in turn be followed by some international concerts, one at the Ethos International Guitar Festival in the Dominican Republic and two at the Entrecuerdes International Guitar Festival in Santiago, Chile.

Jenks has extensive experience as a performer. He received favorable notices for compelling appearances at the Colorado Guitar Festival, the Portland Wine and Arts Festival, the Boulder Colorado Classic Guitar Society, the Newport Performing Arts Center and Cycle Oregon.

He has also performed internationally in France, Germany, Italy and the Dominican Republic. He has worked with the local Pro Arte Chamber Orchestra, was selected to provide the music for a special reception in honor of former Portland Mayor Vera Katz and was the first performer to play at the renovated Elgin Opera House.

Jenks is also founder of Portland Classic Guitar, a guitar shop and teaching studio that since 2001 has provided instruction for hundreds of students of all ages and skill levels, many of who have gone on to pursue music careers.

The Friday concert is sold out. Tickets to the Feb. 22 concert range in price from $15 to $30 and can be purchased online at portlandclassicguitar.com or by calling 503-654-0082. Doors open at 7:15 p.m. and the concert begins at 8 p.m.

Wiegand Hall is located on the Marylhurst University campus, 17600 Pacific Hwy (Highway 43) between Lake Oswego and West Linn.
