Resolve to be happy this year

Silent retreats, classes and free presentation can give you a jumpstart on healthier new year


Surja Tjahaja of West Linn can help you get a jump on your New Year’s resolutions to be happy and healthy in 2014.

He is offering one-day silent mindfulness meditation retreats in Lake Oswego and West Linn. The day includes a review of meditation methods, an opportunity for one-on-one guidance and a closing inspirational talk.

The workshop will be held 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Jan. 4 at the West End Building, 4101 Kruse Way. Cost is $30 for Lake Oswego residents and $45 for non-residents.

The workshop will be repeated Jan. 11 at the Sunset Fire Hall, 2215 Long St. in West Linn. Hours are 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. and cost is $25 for West Linn residents and $30 for non-residents. Register online at westlinnoregon.gov or by phone at 503-557-4700.

Tjahaja will be leading weekly mindful meditation classes in Lake Oswego, West Linn and Milwaukie beginning in January.

Tjahaja will host a screening of his audio-visual presentation “Demystifying Meditation” at 6 p.m. Jan. 27 at the West Linn Public Library, 1595 Burns St. This free talk is geared to those curious about the practice of meditation, highlights of scientific research to explain why meditation is effective in reducing stress and promoting health and happiness.
