VIC'S AUTO CENTER - Mike KeelerIs it time to have your vehicle emissions tested by the Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ)?

The Vehicle Inspection Program of Oregon DEQ maintains a list of recognized automotive repair shops in the greater Portland metro area -- including Vic’s Auto Center -- at www.deq.state.or.us/

To make the list, a shop must demonstrate having the required diagnostic equipment and must employ at least one currently certified A.S.E. (Automotive Service Excellence) technician performing emission diagnoses, related adjustments and repairs.

DEQ vehicle emission tests lets motorists know when the pollution control devices on their vehicle malfunction. Any vehicle that has malfunctioning emission controls or is poorly maintained may emit up to three to four times more pollution than standards allow for new cars. You must pass a re-test before you can receive your DEQ Certificate of Compliance and renew your DMV vehicle registration.

Your Emissions Test Report provides data that can be useful to the person making the repairs on your vehicle.

There are dozens of reasons why your vehicle may fail the test, such as too much Carbon Monoxide, which could mean there’s a dirty air cleaner or air filter; contaminated oil; a stuck choke or malfunctioning fuel injectors.

Excessive Hydrocarbons may mean there’s a misfiring engine; faulty spark plugs, rotor, ignition coil or distributor caps; or a malfunctioning vacuum device.

Vic’s Auto Center knows them all. Vic’s technicians will find the problem, repair it and get you on your way.

HASSON COMPANY REALTORS - Mike Hall Looking at homes online and finding either poor-quality photos or sparse details, I cringe, knowing that the agent (and maybe the seller) doesn’t understand or care what kind of impression is being made.

In the internet age, with a tidal wave of information and shorter attention spans, making a first impression has never been more important.  With big dollars at stake, your Realtor should go all out for appeal in pictures and words, partnering with you to capture the best of your home.

A few things to consider:

Beyond basic attributes (such as four-bedroom, 3,000 square feet), set a scene for the buyer to experience what it’s like to be in your house. What will he or she see and feel when entering the home? Is there a view from the living room and if so, of what? Will they feel radiant-heat floors in the master bath?

Your photos may be lovely, but the visuals won’t tell the whole story. In the kitchen, is that a convection oven? Are those counters granite or composite? How big is the pantry? If there’s a nearby laundry room, say so.

What are the reasons you bought the home? They should be captured in pictures, words, or both.

Marketing your home with words and pictures isn’t rocket science, but there’s a huge difference between slapping a listing together, and going all out for first impressions.  Taking the time to do it right is essential.

LAKE GROVE DENTAL - Charles Braden, DMDRemoving tooth decay is the first step towards preventing further tooth loss. The conditions that led to that tooth decay in the first place must be investigated and a strategy put in place to change those conditions.

Last month we talked about bacteria in the mouth, our ability to identify its presence and the role it plays in causing tooth decay. Fortunately, that problem can be diminished quickly with slight changes in one’s routine. There are other forces, however, that also lead to decay.

Our teeth are bathed in a remarkable fluid -- saliva. A lack of it creates an environment that tooth decay thrives in. Many things can lead to “dry mouth”. Commonly used medications can cause a lack of saliva, as can dehydration, smoking, receiving chemotherapy or radiation treatments and certain diseases.

The pH of saliva is another important aspect of preventing cavities. Healthy saliva is naturally neutral. Every time you eat or drink, the pH in your mouth changes. While the pH is in that non-neutral state, the acids in your mouth build up so that damage and decay occur.

Reducing consumption of highly acidic foods, reducing between-meal snacks, and using products that quickly return your mouth to a neutral state are all possible solutions. Those who suffer from acid reflux can take similar steps to minimize their risk.

Call for a free consultation to evaluate why you and your family keep getting cavities!

DR NGYN - Dr. Nancy SalisburyWomen who have trouble remembering contraception or have very heavy menses may want to consider a long-acting birth control device.

Such devices can be used by all ages, are safe, and are a covered benefit under affordable care. Placement is an office procedure with no down time.

IntraUterine Devices (IUDs) are small, T-shaped devices made of flexible plastic. Inserted into the uterus to prevent pregnancy, IUDs may contain copper, no hormones, or a hormone such as progestin or levonorgestril.

Paragard is completely hormone-free, has copper as an active ingredient and prevents pregnancy for up to 10 years.

Kyleena, new to the market as of October, is a five-year hormonal IUD.

There are two other hormonal IUDs: Skyla and Mirena, each of which have a less-than-98 percent conception rate.

Skyla is a three-year IUD that is smaller in size, has a lower hormone dose and is great for women who have not had children.

Mirena is a five-year IUD with a slightly higher hormone dose (which remains in the uterus) and usually results in light periods or none at all.

A hormonal implant is another option. Nexplanon is safe, convenient and effective. It is a matchstick-sized rod inserted into the arm by a healthcare provider.

At Dr NGYN, we offer all of these devices. We check with your insurance provider for benefits; they are often placed at no cost to you.

TRIOS STUDIO - Mary WongPurchasing diamond jewelry can present an ethical dilemma for consumers who are deeply concerned about such issues as human rights for miners and mining’s negative effects on the environment.

Here at Trios Studio, shoppers needn’t sacrifice their ethics to purchase a stunning diamond sparkler. We have found a supplier of ethically produced diamonds and we’re proud to offer Canadian diamonds for use in our jewelry.

Diamonds are typically mined by very large corporations overseas. The U.S. Congress mandated that diamonds sold in the U.S. must be conflict-free and not fund terrorist activities, but it did not place regulations on human rights for miners or environmental concerns.

Meanwhile, there’s a strict code of conduct for diamond mines in Canada.

We buy natural, mined, conflict-free diamonds from our supplier, Canada Pride, which then sends the rough diamonds for precision cutting in Israel. These are the real thing, not diamonds made in a laboratory.

Canadian diamonds are very white in color, with good clarity and brilliant sparkle (the result of precision cutting). They can then be set in eco-gold, platinum or silver.

Most of our jewelry designs are handmade in our shop, from start to finish. We are designer-goldsmiths and input from our clients is essential. They are involved in design and production decisions before creating the final piece.

We love giving consumers choices that they can feel good about.

HARNISH PROPERTIES - Justin HarnishQ. When’s the best time of year to put my house on the market?

A: We always say that “now is the best time to you sell your home” because you never know when a buyer is out looking! But we do find that most new inventory comes on the market starting around mid- to late January.

Q. What’s the first step?

A. Do your research on local real estate experts. The next step is to set interviews with those Brokers.  Once you have selected a Listing Broker, then their strategy will unfold as you work together to start the process.

Q. I’d like to sell my home for the highest possible price. What will the house require to look its best, inside and out?

A. Getting your home ready for sale and taking it seriously is very important. As part of the implementation of the strategy, a good listing agent will walk you through what to do to improve curb appeal and the general look and feel of the home’s interior.

Q. Is there anything I should consider now that interest rates are beginning to rise again?

A. As rates climb, and they will climb, it’s important that buyers stay in close communication with their Mortgage Brokers to be aware of what each incremental increase does to their borrowing power and monthly payment. As a seller, it’s equally important to stay in tune, as such increases affect them as well!

PETROFF CENTER - Dr. Mark PetroffHere at Petroff Center, we’re excited have a brand-new skin resurfacing system to offer our patients for the New Year!

The HydroPlus Facial Skin Resurfacing system is a professional-grade, crystal-free treatment that can reduce the effects of aging on your skin. Featuring the patented DiamondTome and Hydro Wand, the device provides a safe, therapeutic treatment for superior skin care results.

Skin Resurfacing is an exfoliation technique for removing the topmost layer of skin, leaving it more supple and vibrant. The DT2 Skin Resurfacing System removes this layer by gently exfoliating the skin with natural diamond chips at the tip of a wand, while at the same time vacuuming the exfoliated skin cells away in a controlled manner. Removing this outer layer of dead skin cells leaves a smoother texture and promotes growth of healthy new skin cells.

The HydroPlus Facial combines the benefits of exfoliation with the infusion of therapeutic serums. The new Hydro Wand infusion system allows for deeper product penetration, hydration and skin nourishment all in one treatment. This system can be customized to your individual skin type. The Petroff Center offers serums for skin brightening and lightening, a blemish fighter for acne, a power hydration formula and an antioxidant Vitamin C formula.

A trained esthetician administers treatments. The HydroPlus Facial treatment is non-invasive, pain-free and requires no down time.

For best results, several treatments are recommended for healthier, younger-looking skin.

EVCOT - Jon Wisniewski, DVMWith New Year’s celebrations just a few days away, remember to think about your pets.

New Year's noise: As you count down to the New Year, please keep in mind that strings of thrown confetti can get lodged in a cat's intestines, perhaps necessitating surgery. Noisy poppers can terrify pets and cause possible damage to sensitive ears. Remember that many pets are also scared of fireworks, so be sure to secure them in a safe, escape-proof area as midnight approaches. Consider a Thundershirt for your dog, which swaddles and calms the pet.

Medications? Plan ahead: Many medications can take several weeks to reach peak effects. Sedatives alone (such as acepromazine) can be used, but do not fix the anxiety — they just reduce the pet's response to the anxiety. As an emergency veterinarian, I cannot prescribe medications without a doctor-patient relationship, meaning I cannot dispense the medications without performing a physical examination (it's state and federal law).

Careful with cocktails: If your New Year’s Eve celebration or next-day football party includes adult beverages, be sure to place your unattended alcoholic drinks where pets cannot get to them. If ingested, your pet could become weak and ill.

Dangerous food: Make sure to keep your pets away from the table and unattended plates of food, and be sure to secure the lids on garbage cans. Fatty, spicy human foods, as well as bones, should not be fed to your furry friends.

DR NGYN - Dr. Nancy SalisburyThe Mona Lisa Touch is an FDA-approved CO2 laser that is used to rejuvenate the cells of the vagina.

Woman want this area to respond, lubricate and accommodate appropriately. By changing things at the cellular level, we are seeing profound changes for women, primarily those in menopause or experiencing disease states that do not allow hormones. To me, the treatment response has been astounding.

Women we treat are noticing improved tone, a better-behaving bladder and a better sexual response. Neither the literature, nor my experience, has revealed a down side. There have been no adverse effects from the treatment. Women are greater than 95 percent satisfied and many of the benefits have been a surprise.

It is an outpatient procedure that is $2,400 for three treatments, performed six weeks apart. There is no down time. Women are amazed when the procedure is not painful, because relations have been painful for so long.

Unfortunately, the treatment is not covered by insurance. Lasers are an expensive technology because the devices are a large capital expense.

Ladies AND Gentlemen, this is a game-changer if things are not right down there.

Come in and talk about it. I would love to help change things for the better or talk about all the options that might be available to you.

LAKE GROVE DENTAL - Charles Branen, DMDWith recent developments in detecting bacterial strains in the mouth and how they affect the presence of tooth decay and overall health, we are taking every step to discover and strategize for each of our patients the best way for them to have a healthy, cavity-free mouth and improved general wellness.

Indicators evident in the mouth tell a great deal about your overall being. There are now discovered links between oral pathogens to tooth decay, pancreatic cancer, stillbirth or preterm babies. Periodontal disease is also now linked to heart disease, cancer, stroke, diabetes, erectile dysfunction and more.

We now have methods to test the level of bacteria present in the mouth for those at high risk of tooth decay. In chronic cases, we can even do testing that determines which type of bacteria are present and take steps to reduce or eliminate those pathogens. A variety of new rinses and toothpastes are on the market, which use natural ingredients with anti-bacterial properties that surpass even antibiotics.

For a long time, the relationship of the mouth to the whole body’s wellness has been ignored. We now know that, instead, the mouth serves as a window into which we can see early signs of life-diminishing conditions, let alone tooth decay and periodontal disease.

PETROFF CENTER - Dr. Mark PetroffHave you ever considered a hair removal treatment, but been wary of the price, permanence or the time involved?

At Petroff Center, we use the GentleMax Pro Laser, which powerfully yet gently removes hair with faster treatment times and decreased sensation.

Through the end of December, we are offering 20 percent off hair removal packages, which consist of a series of six treatments.

Unlike many previous professional laser hair removal options, GentleMax Pro generates permanent outcomes and is safe and effective on all skin tones.

Its Gentle Hair Removal technology features a patented Dynamic Cooling Device (DCD), which minimizes discomfort by releasing a quick burst of liquid cryogen before and after each laser pulse.

The cryogen rapidly evaporates, cooling the outer layers of the skin and making the treatment much more comfortable by removing the snapping and burning sensation generally associated with laser hair removal. During the treatment, a handpiece delivers a laser pulse into the targeted areas and a controlled amount of therapeutic heat that safely and effectively damages the hair follicles. The DCD technology makes treatments easy and comfortable for our patients.

GentleMax Pro has the industry’s largest handpiece spot size of 24mm, allowing us to drastically reduce treatment time. It is the only FDA-approved treatment for permanent hair reduction.

Hair removal treatments take anywhere from a few minutes to about an hour, depending on the area being treated. Since hair grows in three stages, six treatments spaced six weeks apart are recommended for optimal results.

HASSON COMPANY REALTORS - Mike HallIf you built your own home today, how would you want it oriented?  Rising sun in the East, kissing your master bedroom or breakfast area?  Sunsets on a West-facing patio?  Shade just right for midsummer afternoons?

With so many choices and compromises to be made in finding a home, I find often that this one is often overlooked.

Most folks know generally that they like “light and bright,” but many aren’t great at knowing the compass points and where the sun moves.  Every home is different, and it’s one of those things you can’t upgrade by remodeling!

I use a compass often when showing homes. It’s a standard app on most smartphones, and it lets you be certain of where South is on a dark day. I find where the sun’s path falls on the home, including where trees are located and whether they’re evergreen or deciduous.

There are also plenty of online calculators that help visualize the sun’s path, like www.suncalc.org/.  Just enter a home’s address and it overlays the lot, the structure and the sun’s path.  Slick!

The other orientation that can be really important is to the prevailing winds/storms, which are usually southwesterly.  That side takes a beating, so having some cover to the southwest, whether porch or back patio, is valuable.

Next time you look at a home, grab your phone/compass and give it some thought, and give me a call!
