Walters sets the stage with new voices, old favorites

Tickets for the Walters Cultural Arts Center 2014-2015 concert series are now on sale.

The series kicks off in September with two intimate performances by pianist George Winston Friday, Sept. 26, at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday, Sept. 27, at 2 p.m.

A legendary performer, Winston has been winning over audiences with his moving and innovative piano style for more than three decades. Winston’s signature folk piano style reflects his unique artistry and celebrates the rich musical influences of New Orleans rhythm & blues.

All shows are at the Walters Cultural Arts Center, 527 E. Main St. in Hillsboro. All performances start at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $27 in advance and $32 the day of the show. Purchases can be made at the Walters box office, at 503-615-3485, or online at brownpapertickets.com.

The Walters concert series has continued to evolve over the past 10 years in an effort to enrich the community with world-class performers, affordable concerts and free matinees.

In October, Toni Lincoln will perform at the Walters Center as part of “an evening of jazz, featuring Tom Grant, Ron Steen and Dave Captein.” Audiences are often captivated and impressed by the vocal prowess and emotional depth of this rising jazz virtuoso.

The Portland Cello Project will perform Oct. 17. PCP has built a reputation for exciting live performances that mix genres and blur musical lines and perceptions.

Carlene Carter — daughter of June Carter-Cash and stepdaughter to Johnny Cash — will stop in Hillsboro as part of the tour for her new album, “Carter Girl,” Nov. 7.

The show will feature Carter on the piano and guitar, accompanied by electric and steel guitar, piano and harmonica.

Acoustic Guitar Summit, featuring Mark Hanson, Terry Robb and Doug Smith, will perform Dec. 12.

This concert celebrates the group’s 20th anniversary, incorporating a wide-ranging repertoire that crosses genres and rejoices in the rhythm and power of this distinctive musical style.

The Oregon Mandolin Orchestra will perform Dec. 19. This annual holiday concert will include Arcangelo Corelli’s entire Concerto Grosso No. 8, often referred to as “the Christmas Concerto.”

Craig Carothers will perform in January. Portland Opera To Go will perform “The Barber of Seville,” and the Shook Twins will perform in February. BodyVox-2 will perform in March, as will the Misty Mamas.

Chris Smither and Portland Center Stage will be the featured April shows, and the Oregon Mandolin Orchestra will be back in May before Alasdair Fraser and Natalie Hass round out the concert series.
