Youth can learn to sew and knit

Washington County 4-H is sponsoring a free sewing and knitting learning day for youth Saturday, Feb. 22, from 9 a.m. to noon at the Washington Street Conference Center, 225 S. First Ave. in Hillsboro.

There will be projects for complete beginners as well as those with some sewing experience.

Artists can represent Hillsboro

The city of Hillsboro Public Art Program is giving artists the chance to apply to become part of Hillsboro’s public art collection.

Each year, the city purchases works that depict the characteristic landscape, city views, people and places of Hillsboro for the city’s collection.

The purchased works are displayed in the Civic Center auditorium. Archival prints are presented as the official city gift to dignitaries and business leaders from around the world.

Applications can be found at Hillsboro-oregon.gov and are due Feb. 13. All artists are eligible, but Hillsboro artists are especially encouraged to apply.

Hillsboro arts called to apply for funding

Applications for the 2014-2015 Community Arts & Culture grants are due at 5 p.m. March 28.

Arts and culture organizations that provide programming to Hillsboro are eligible for funding. Educational or social service organizations with an arts and culture component or partner also qualify.

The HACC organization tries to raise awareness of the arts in Hillsboro, expand or support existing arts programs, foster collaboration between community members, and provide access to arts and cultural experiences to the underserved.

Tuesday night write-ins still happening

The Northwest Independent Writers Association is still hosting “Tuesday Night Write-Ins” at Primrose & Tumbleweeds, 248 E. Main St. in Hillsboro. Play dates are back in North Plains

Families are invited to run obstacle courses, throw balls and bean bags, walk on stilts, and jump in bounce houses in North Plains. Play dates are free and open for everyone at the Jessie Mays Community Hall, 30975 N.W. Hillcrest St. in North Plains. Snacks and drinks are donated, and volunteers are needed to help plan and set up. Parents should be available to supervise kids during the dates, which are open 1:30 to 5 p.m. Play dates are generally the fourth Sunday of the month.
