Summa, Sequoia offer First Tuesday reception for new September exhibit

Colorful, strange oil paintings will be on display in September at Summa Gallery, 231 E. Main St. in Hillsboro, where artist Joanne Licardo combines fantasy elements with everyday objects and figures into a whimsical whole she calls “imaginary realism.”

Samples of her work can be seen at paintwithjoanne.com.

Licardo will attend a First Tuesday reception at Summa from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 3, along with acoustic guitarist Andrew Grade, who slaps, taps and strums his songs in a way that is as fun to hear as to watch.by: COURTESY PHOTOS: SUMMA - Painter Joanne Licardo brings her imaginary realism to Summa Gallery in Hillsboro for the month of September.

Over at Sequoia Gallery + Studios, 136 S.E. Third Ave. in Hillsboro, Bonnie Beall’s work will be on display next month. “Looking Through” is the theme of her watercolor paintings. She got the idea when she was going through a box of old photos and marveled at how many had been taken through windows and doors, under bridges, through fences and through broken-down buildings.

Beall modeled her paintings on those photos, which include shots from Italy, Holland and Romania, as well as from Washington, eastern Oregon, the Oregon coast and covered bridges in Iowa.

Chung Hee Choi’s oriental brush paintings will also be featured. Landscapes and nature are common themes of her work, including Oregon subjects such as Mt. Hood, Mt. St. Helens and Multnomah Falls, which she paints in the Chinese manner.

Choi says mountains make her feel generous, trees stimulate meditation and waves make her feel soft and graceful.

Wood sculptures by Martin Conley will also be on display at Sequoia. Conley has recently begun using more found wood and driftwood. Recognizing that nature is able to create things he cannot, Conley enjoys “further enhancing” what nature has started.

Like Summa, Sequoia is hosting a reception for its artists from 6 to 8 p.m. Sept. 3.
