ZIP code changes coming to Aloha area

Better hold off on printing new business cards, address labels or letterhead for a while. The U.S. Postal Service (USPS) has announced there will be some local changes to ZIP codes that will go into effect July 1.

According to postal officials, the change is needed due to a large increase in population and in the number of companies doing business in the Aloha-Beaverton area.

“A ZIP code does have capacity,” said Peter Hass, spokesman for the USPS Portland district. “We’ve added two new ZIP code numbers because of all the growth in the area. We need to plan to continue to be efficient, so we are adjusting and adding ZIP codes in growth areas.”

According to Hass, the new ZIP codes will be 97003 and 97078. Some addresses in ZIP code 97006 will be changed to 97003, and some addresses in 97007 will be changed to the 97078 number.

“There are 10,493 addresses in the 97006 ZIP code that will get the new 97003 code; and 7,658 addresses in 97007 that will be changed to 97078,” he said.

Hass pointed out, however, that most addresses within the two impacted ZIP codes will not be changed. He said there are a total of 98,969 addresses in the two ZIP code areas, but only 18,151 addresses will need to be changed to one of the new numbers.

To ease the transition, the USPS has promised to continue to deliver mail with the old ZIP code for one year.

Hass said the changes are at least indirectly related to the accelerating growth about to get started in South Hillsboro and North Hillsboro.

“Part of the reason for the change is anticipation,” said Hass. “We do this with the thought that growth will continue in the area, so it’s necessary to expand capacity and add ZIP codes.”

The new boundaries of ZIP code 97003 will be as follows: The northern boundary will go from Southwest Jenkins Road and run east to west from Southwest Murray Boulevard to where it converges into West Baseline Road and ends at Southwest Cornelius Pass Road; the western boundary will go from Southwest Cornelius Pass Road from West Baseline Road to Southwest Tualatin Valley Highway; the southern boundary will go from Southwest Tualatin Valley Highway, running west to east from Southwest Cornelius Pass Boulevard to Southwest Murray Boulevard; and the eastern boundary will be from Southwest Murray Boulevard from Southwest Tualatin Valley Highway to Southwest Jenkins Road. However, all addresses on the boundary roads listed will retain their current 97006 ZIP code.

The new boundaries of ZIP code 97078: The northern boundary will run from Southwest Tualatin Valley Highway, running east to west from Southwest Murray Boulevard to Southwest 229th Avenue; the western boundary will go from Southwest 229th Avenue from Southwest Tualatin Valley Highway to Southwest Rosedale Road and then west to Southwest River Road and south to Southwest Farmington Road; southern boundary will go from Southwest Farmington Road running west to east from Southwest River Road to Southwest Murray Boulevard; the eastern boundary will be from Southwest Murray Boulevard from Southwest Farmington Road to Southwest Tualatin Valley Highway. As with the new 97003 code, the addresses on the boundary roads will keep their existing ZIP code.

Hass said 97003 and 97078 are the only new ZIP codes being introduced in Oregon this year.
