Residential planes near North Plains?

Citizens still have time to weigh in on a proposal to create a “residential airpark overlay district” near the Sunset Airstrip southwest of North Plains.

If approved, Ordinance No. 722 would make possible a residential airpark on the south side of Highway 26 and west of Glencoe Road — a neighborhood specifically designed around an airport in which residents usually own airplanes.

It would be a first for the county, according to Paul Schaefer, a senior planner with Washington County.

The airpark district would limit commercial activities — such as flying lessons — but property owners could build hangars in which to house their aircraft.

Several citizens came to the Oct. 1 meeting with the Washington County Board of Commissioners to voice their opposition to the project, citing pollution, noise, health concerns and greenhouse gas emissions as potential issues.

Speaking in favor of the plan was Bob Jossy of Jossy Farms, who owns land adjacent to the Sunset Airstrip. Jossy and his wife own an approved 18-home subdivision around the Sunset Airstrip and want the owners of the new homes to be part of the airpark district.

Public hearings on the issue are set for 10 a.m. on Oct. 15 and 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 22 in the county’s Public Services Building, 155 N. First Ave., Hillsboro.

Written testimony can be sent to the Washington County Department of Land Use and Transportation Planning and Development Services, Long Range Planning, 155 N. First Ave., Suite 350-14, Hillsboro, OR 97124.
