Getting ready for a road trip this summer? Make sure your vehicle is as ready to go as you are.
According to the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence, the following should be professionally checked before you hit the road:
Tires – Rotate about every 5,000 miles and get tire pressure checked. Examine tires for tread life, uneven wearing, and cupping; check the sidewalls for cuts and nicks. An alignment is warranted if there's uneven tread wear or if your vehicle pulls to one side. Check the spare and be sure the jack is in good condition.
Brakes should be inspected as recommended in your manual, or sooner if you notice pulsations, grabbing, noises, or longer stopping distance.
Air Conditioning A marginally operating system will fail in hot weather. Have the system examined by a qualified technician. Newer models have cabin air filters that clean the air entering the heating and air conditioning system.
Cooling System The greatest cause of summer breakdowns is overheating. The cooling system should be completely flushed and refilled about every 24 months. The level, condition, and concentration of the coolant should be checked periodically. The tightness and condition of drive belts, clamps, and hoses should be checked by a pro.
Other things that should be checked are engine performance, oil, oil filter, windshield wipers, lights and the battery.
Weston Kia works on all makes and models. Give us a call so we can make sure you have a trouble-free, comfortable trip.

Its no secret that senior living can be a major expense. Thankfully, two government programs offer a safety net to seniors. Read on for more information on Medicare and Medicaid.
Medicare is a national health insurance program available to all Americans when they turn 65.
Similar to private health insurance, Medicare is great for reducing or eliminating the cost of certain prescription medications, doctor appointments and hospitalizations. After hospitalization, Medicare will usually pay for a skilled nurse or caregiver to visit you at home, but only during a set period of recovery.
Unfortunately, Medicare is intended only for short-term care, and generally does not pay for extended periods of treatment, including long stays at independent, assisted living or memory care senior communities.
Unlike Medicare, Medicaid can and regularly does pay for long-term senior living care, though certain requirements apply. In general, Medicaid recipients must show that they are low income, facing medical expenses that exceed their income or that they have already spent the majority of their savings on health care costs.
At this point, Medicaid benefits can pay for long-term nursing home care, as well as alternatives like in-home care or assisted living.
Prestige Senior Living and Huntington Terrace are committed to making senior living affordable for all. For more help, give one of our Prestige team members a callthey can help you navigate the system and determine your eligibility.

An experienced business attorney is crucial for creating a strong foundation for your business partnership. Without a written partnership agreement, your business will lack a clear outline of what roles, obligations and rewards are due to each partner.
Here are five things you can do to protect yourself when forming a business partnership.
Put everything in writing. When it comes to revenue sharing, intellectual property rights and start-up cost repayment, dont assume a handshake deal will be honored years or even decades later. Use a trusted business attorney to create a legally-binding partnership agreement.
Have a long-term plan. Disagreeing on (or not even discussing) the long-term goals of your business partnership is practically failure by design. Having a comprehensive growth strategy helps you prepare for the futureand anticipate future headaches.
Consider a limited partnership. In a traditional partnership agreement, both partners assume liability (read: responsibility) for the actions of the other. A limited partnership narrows your liability to your own actions.
Make it uneven. Every business needs a boss, including business partnerships. A 60-40 or even 70-30 ownership split ensures that deadlocks will be broken and final decisions made.
Create an exit strategy. In the case of a break up, your partnership agreement should stipulate procedures for buying out a partner, splitting company property and sharing closing expenses.

Brought to you by Marie Nicholson - Cherry Park Plaza - RETIREMENT INSIDER -
When its time to move to a retirement community, a checklist from an insider can be helpful. Marie Nicholson has a handful of insider hints that people often overlook.
Ask to tour and try the food. This will be your main restaurant. So, try it more than once. Ask about the chef and cooks, their experience and how long they have worked there. Where did they work before? Ask about dining hours, choices and special diets.
Ask about the communitys emergency plans, security and number of elevators.
Talk with the retirement communitys administrator. She hires, decides community policy and intercedes with the corporate folks about rate increases. Ask her how long employees have worked there, because new employees make it harder for YOU to adjust.
Observe employees interaction with residents. Are they respectful, cheerful and helpful? Are they friendly?
Decipher what is free and what is added on to the base cost as monthly or one-time fees. Ask about the costs for pets, transportation, parking (reserved or free), housekeeping, meal plans, utilities (Wi-Fi, cable, phone), community fees and deposits.
Ask for everything in writing. If its not in writing with a signature, its not a real offer. Ask to read the retirement communitys contract before you leave a deposit. Remember, seeing is believing and better than promises.
Take pictures. After you narrow it down to two, go back and visit each retirement community again.

Last month, we took a virtual trip to Disneyland. Today, I want to continue on our journey to the wonderful Walt Disney World, located just outside Orlando, Florida.
Like Disneyland, Disney World is the perfect vacation spot for multi-generational groups. The parks planners have clearly thought about the differing needs of kids, teens, adults and elders, and theyve done a great job catering to everyone.
That being said, there are some key differences between the two sites. The most obvious is size.
Disney World is enormousabout 40 square miles in total. Thats basically the same size as San Francisco!
On the plus side, you could probably spend a month at Disney World and still not experience everything. But for multi-generational families, mobility becomes a much bigger issue. Disney World does a great job of providing free transportation via bus lines, a monorail system and even boats. But simply put, theres going to be more walking, and that can wear out anyone.
Disney World also has a lot more amenities. Walt Disney World has 34 on-site hotels; Disneyland has just three. Its almost always cheaper to stay off site, but that adds transportation time too.
Finally, if youre interested in the newest rides for Star Wars, Avatar and Frozen, many are coming to Florida before they hit the West Coast.
Well, thats all for now. For more information on planning your dream Disney vacation, give me a call!

Do you have spider veins? Bridge City Medical offers two great options to remove them.
The first option is called sclerotherapy. It works by injecting a salt-based irritant directly into the blood vessel, scarring the vein and causing the body to reroute blood through healthier avenues. The blocked vein is then reabsorbed into the body.
Sclerotherapy works best on the legs and hands, and is generally the quicker and less expensive option.
But if your problem is spidery veins on your face, you may be a great candidate for surface laser therapy. Much like sclerotherapy, the heat from a laser can cause scar tissue to form inside spider veins. These blocked vessels then shrivel and die.
Some patients report that laser therapy is more uncomfortable than sclerotherapy, but in both cases no anesthetic is necessary. Most patients can resume their normal exercise routines after three or five days.

Summer is on its way, and the last thing you need is a broken AC unit. Thankfully, doing some simple maintenance now can save you time and money later. Read on for seven steps to keep your AC working.
Change your filters. Sometimes, the easiest step is also the most important. Yet many people still skip this simple upkeep activity. Dirty filters reduce your systems efficiency, costing you more in the long run. A dirty filter can also cause your AC coil to freeze and leak water outside the indoor unit.
Clear area around outdoor condenser. If you stored anything around your outdoor condenser coil over the winter, its time to clear it out. There needs to be at least 18 inches of clearance around the outdoor condenser for correct air flow. If there are any leaves that have accumulated around the outdoor unit, those also need to be cleared out so that they are not sucked up against the outdoor coil, causing a restriction in the air flow.
Check the outdoor coil. Inspect the outdoor coil to see if there has been a collection of debris, such as cotton wood debris. If this is the case, you may need to have someone come out and clean the coil.
Check the air vents. Check to make sure that at least 90 percent of your supply air vents are open and that your return grilles are not blocked. This assures that there is proper air flow going across the indoor evaporator coil.
Check the coolant line. The coolant pipes that connect your evaporator to the outdoor condenser are usually covered in some sort of foam insulation. Youll need to replace it if the insulation is torn or missing.
Thermostat batteries. If your thermostat is electronic and has batteries, this is a good time to change them. This will help in keeping the communication between your thermostat and your cooling system running smooth.
Consider a tune-up. Prepping your AC system can be a little daunting, especially if it's your first time. Our skilled service technicians can give your system a complete checkup to ensure an easy and breezy summer. Stay cool!

Brought to you by Donivon McCord - McCord Construction - CONSTRUCTION INSIDER -
A shed can add utility and value to your property, and McCord Construction can help you with every step of the process. But if youve decided to go it alone, here are five factors to consider before breaking ground.
Determine a design. Before you plan your shed, you need to know its intended purpose. A storage shed likely doesnt need electricity, natural lighting or much in the way of ventilation, but a workshop space may need all these things. Decide now, before you build.
Check your codes. In Gresham, you can generally build a non-habitable one-story detached accessory structure (read: shed) without applying for a permit. But the structures floor space must not exceed 200 square feet, and the buildings height is limited to 10 feet.
Stipulate a size. In my experience, amateur shed builders are far more likely to underestimate the amount of space they will need than overestimate. A good rule of thumb is to increase your initial floor space by 25 percent.
Find a foundation. Poured concrete slabs are probably the most standard flooring option for sheds, but many others use gravel, a joisted floor on footings or pressure-treated lumber.
Be honest. Before beginning any home-improvement project, its important to take a step back and honestly assess the time, money and skills needed to succeed. As a builder, I understand the DIY impulsebut dont be afraid to hire a contractor to help get the job done.

Brought to you by Doug Lepper - Crown Carpets - FLOORING INSIDER -
While Crown Carpets will never guarantee any carpet to be stain proof, the reality is that the science of stain resistance technology has come a very long way in the last several years.
For a long time, the best the carpet manufacturers could do was to apply topical treatments to carpet after it had been manufactured. The best known of these treatments was Scotchgard. The problem with topical treatments is just that they only coat and protect the top of the yarn. If enough liquid is spilled to soak in, it will stain the yarn from the bottom up. Moreover, topical treatments can wear away over time with foot traffic, vacuuming and professional cleanings, making it necessary to re-apply them to maintain any level of protection.
Todays more advanced treatments are built into the fiber before it is made into carpet, resulting in total coverage that virtually eliminates stains from penetrating into the carpet. Additionally, these treatments permanently alter the fiber to produce enduring protection to repel liquids and soil even after repeated cleanings. And on top of that, it has been found that carpet treated with modern stain-resist technology is less likely to trap and hold household odors. So, when it comes to carpet that is more resistant to stains, soil and odors, they dont make em like they used to they make them much better!

Are you sitting down? You may want to stand up before you read this important news: spending too much time sitting down is now the fourth leading cause of premature deaths worldwide.
Prolonged sedentary time (usually defined as spending eight hours a day or more off ones feet) has been associated with increased risk for cardiovascular disease, cancer and type 2 diabetes, according to a 2015 study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine.
The average U.S. adult now spends 10 hours sitting each dayso much that even an hour of vigorous exercise cant counterbalance the deleterious effects of that much low energy-expending behavior.
Given the prevalence of sitting, its no surprise that eight out of 10 Americans now say they suffer from back pain. Of that population, at least 40 percent blame the long hours they spending sitting.
The truth is that the discs in your back are designed to expand and contract regularly. Physical activity (not just standing upright) allows the back to absorb blood and nutrients. In contrast, prolonged sitting compresses your back, leading to less flexibility over time. Too much sedentary behavior also increases your risk of a herniated disc.
If you think your back pain may be tied to your work and living habits, schedule a professional consultation with Dr. Thomas today. He and his staff will help you develop a healthy lifestyle regimen that eliminates your pain. Call today!
