The Gresham boys soccer team put on a wild finish to score a 4-3 home win over Sherwood in the season opener Tuesday afternoon.

Trailing 3-0 with less than 15 minutes on the clock, Gresham scored off a corner kick and a cross into the middle before Daniel Ruiz won a ball at the left corner flag, dribbled along the end line and sneaked a shot between the goalie and the near post.

In a flash, the game was tied.

With the clock ticking toward two minutes to play, Ruiz rushed down the center of the field into the 18-yard box. He wasn't in time to catch the through ball before Sherwood keeper Jett Krieger arrived on the scene.

It wouldn't matter.

Krieger attempted to kick the ball clear only to see Ruiz shift his body to absorb the blast, sending the ball careening into the net for the winning goal.

"That was pretty crazy — I don't even know how to describe it," Gophers' coach Rex Moffit said.
