Bruins hold off West Linn in the late innings
The Bruins move into the RPIs top-10 after an 8-6 road win against the Lions
WEST LINN Barlows softball team came through with a pair of clutch runs in the seventh inning to hold off West Linn 8-6 under the lights Tuesday night.
The Bruins saw their early 6-1 lead collapse under the weight of a Lions comeback, which put the tying run on base in the fifth inning before Barlow outfielder Maddy Topaum raced across the turf for a catch at the left-field line that sent the Lions back to the dugout.
Leading 6-4, the Bruins doubled their cushion in the seventh inning on a two-out single through the middle by Kaylee Ree.
Those runs proved to be the difference after West Linn posted a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh before Barlow pitcher Abbie Bergerson struck out the last batter to keep the tying run in the on-deck circle.
The Bruins (5-4) finish the preseason schedule at home Tuesday against Hermiston before opening the Mount Hood schedule at 3:45 p.m. Thursday at Delta Park against No. 3-ranked Central Catholic (6-0).
