Defense powers Blue Jays to an opening win
Portland Lutheran puts away Waldorf 51-35 to start the Valley 10 playoffs
The Portland Lutheran boys basketball team used a stifling defensive effort to handle Portland Waldorf 51-35 in the opening round of the Valley 10 playoffs Thursday night.
The Wolfpack were held in single digits through the first half, and Portland Lutheran maintained a double-digit gap most of the way. The Blue Jays broke the game open with a scoring flurry coming out of the halftime locker room.
Center Dylan DeGeneres took on a double team under the basket for one layin and followed with an offensive putback moments later. Lutherans next trip downcourt saw guard Tyler Stanfill slash to the basket, increasing the margin to 27-10 and prompting Waldorf to call a timeout.
The Blue Jays advance to face Southwest Christian in the third-place game at 4:30 p.m. Saturday. The winner earns a spot into the 1A state playoffs.
