Saints sweep through first round in a hurry

Mt. Hood CC rushes through the first two sets and wins a tight third game over Everett

Hood CC made quick work of its first-round opponent during the Northwest championship tournament Thursday morning, sweeping past Everett in straight sets.

The teams traded points into the late stages of the third set, trapped in a tie eight times before Centennial High graduate Keely Siegel blasted a winner into the back row to put Mt. Hood ahead to stay 23-22.

The match ended a couple points later when Everett’s setter attempted a crosscourt assist only to see the ball float across the net. Mt. Hood’s Carrie Haguewood was quick off her feet to pound the ball down for a hill.

The Saints (35-6) advance to face Lower Columbia (14-22) in the second round at 10 a.m. Friday. The Red Devils scored the only major upset of Day 1 with a four-set win over East Region runner-up Spokane.

Mt. Hood won all three head-to-head matches with Lower Columbia this season, but did drop two sets along the way.

With a win in the morning, the Saints would advance to likely face North champion Olympic in a third-round match at 6:30 p.m. Friday.

The double-elimination tournament continues through the weekend with the title match at 3 p.m. Sunday. Admission is $10 per adult or $5 for military, seniors and students. Ages 12-and-under are free.
