Blue Jays close the gap, but Spray pulls away late
Spray puts up a pair of fourth-quarter TDs to claim the 50-25 win
Portland Lutherans football team made a run at Spray in the second half Friday before getting stuck in quicksand during the fourth quarter of a 50-25 loss.
Trailing 30-12 in the third quarter, the Blue Jays relied on its special teams to get back into the game. Tyler Stanfill blocked a punt that was recovered by teammate Timothy Bergdolt in the end zone.
Portland Lutheran booted an onsides kick and recovered when Bergdolt slammed into a Spray player and caused a fumble near midfield. The Blue Jays worked their way downfield and got another touchdown when QB Jonathon Parrish stretched the ball over the goal line to finish off a 9-yard scoring scamper.
The TD brought the Blue Jays within 30-25 with 2:11 left in the third quarter.
But those would prove to be the teams final points of the day.
Spray responded with the games final three touchdowns to earn the victory.
