Sunsets passing attack too much for Bruins

The Apollos pull away with five TDs in the second half

by: THE OUTLOOK: DAVID BALL - Barlow running back Speedy Sanchez takes the hand-off from QB Alex Plusquellec during the first half of Fridays 51-17 loss to Sunset. Unable to slow Sunset’s passing game for most of the first half, Barlow appeared to turn the tide when Hunter Roeder came down with an interception shortly before halftime.

But in reality, the Bruins had just poked a hornet’s nest.

Sunset came out of intermission fired up and found the end zone five times in the second half to run away with a 51-17 win.

Barlow took an early 3-0 lead when its opening drive ended in a 30-yard field goal by Zach Standish. But the Bruins wouldn’t stay ahead for long.

Little more than a minute later, Sunset QB Willy Pflug fired a 23-yard touchdown pass to Jeff Bieber — the first of three long scoring strikes in the first half.

Barlow clawed back into the game with its first touchdown of the season when running back Speedy Sanchez found his way over the goal line from 1 yard out.

The Bruins had a chance to pull closer after Roeder’s interception near the end of the half. Roeder came up big again with a 17-yard catch that put Barlow on the edge of field goal range for Standish with :04 on the clock. But his attempt was blocked by Sunset’s 6-foot-6 lineman Josh Brown.
