All aboard as employees celebrate on Halloween

Ladies pay tribute to the city's former mayor Paul Thalhofer and history of railroad depot

And instead of just handing out candy to trick-or-treaters who stopped by downtown businesses last night, they figured they might throw in a little history lesson as well.

Thalhofer served as mayor of Troutdale from April 1993 through December 2008. Before that he served as a city councilor from 1983 to 1993 and a planning commissioner in 1980-82.

Debbie Stickney, city recorder, said of Thalhofer, now in his mid-80s, “He was a great man for the city. We just respected him so much, and he respected the employees of Troutdale. We thought this was a great tribute to him.”

Shops and businesses in downtown opened their doors last night for children to come trick-or-treating.

Kids visiting City Hall were given scrolls with the history of Troutdale’s Rail Depot and a list of all Troutdale mayors from 1907 to 2013.

They also got to take their picture in front of a railroad crossing and caboose painted on the City Hall window.

Troutdale became a railroad town in 1882 after Capt. John Harlow’s struggle to win a rail depot ended when the Oregon Railway Navigation Company’s rail line opened from Portland to Bonneville with a stop at Troutdale.

Back then, the city’s one-sided main street — facing north toward the railroad tracks, warehouses and depot — was where all the action was. At that time nearly everything and everyone traveled by train.by: OUTLOOK PHOTO: CARI HACHMANN - City Recorder Debbie Stickney, right, and Kelley Graham, receptionist, raise office morale in costume.
