The committee advises the council of financial and budgetary matters.

One of the Finance Committee's tasks, which is helmed by chairman Jared Koga, is establishing the compensation schedule for the Mayor and Councilors, which is done every year.

For fiscal year 2017/18, the total budget for their salaries is $181,200, which includes the Mayor and six Councilors. That is an increase from fiscal years 2015/16 and 2016/17, when their compensation added up to $135,200.

Wood Village plays it safe

Wood Village government workers survived another year without any on-the-job injuries, earning City Hall a coveted Gold Safety Award.

Citycounty Insurance Services, an indemnity firm that insures many municipal corporations in Oregon, presented the award for to Councilor Mark Clark during the annual League of Oregon Cities meeting this September in Portland.

"Our winners are cities that adopt safe work practices and make sure those practices are followed, day in and day out," CIS Executive Director Lynn McNamara said in a press release. "Their commitment and vigilance produces results: employees stay on the job, and costs stay down."

Councilor Clark will present the award for the fiscal year covering 2016 and 2017 on Tuesday, Oct. 10, during a regular Council meeting.

Corbett Fire educates public for safety week

The Corbett Fire Department will visit area schools and host an open house during National Fire Prevention Week, which began on Monday, Oct. 9.

On Saturday, Oct. 14, the public is invited to visit the main station at 36930 E. Historic Columbia River Highway to ride on a fire truck, see demonstrations, learn about address signs for rural residences and taste authentic firehouse cooking. The event runs from noon to 3 p.m.

Homeowners will also learn special tips for protecting their property from wildfires.

Firefighters will also meet students at Corbett Grade School on Tuesday, Oct. 10, and at Corbett Arts Program with Spanish on Thursday, Oct. 12. Pupils will practice stop, drop and roll techniques and learn how to craft an evacuation plan in case of an emergency.

Benefit for senior center set for Thursday

The Gresham Senior Center's Holiday Craft Fair will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 12, in the Blue Lake Room of the Multnomah County East Building, 600 N.E. Eighth St., Gresham.

Shoppers will find a great selection of handcrafted gifts and decorations for Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Proceeds benefit the senior center and Ambleside Shoppe.
