50 families in the Centennial neighborhood can grow vegetables starting this fall

COURTESY PHOTO - Lynch Wood families soon can grow yummy and healthy produce in the new public gardenIf you live in the Centennial neighborhood and always dreamed of homegrown vegetables or berries but just don't have the space for a garden, Lynch Wood Elementary School, 3615 S.E. 174th St., is opening a community garden just for such wanna-be gardeners.

Don't get those starts ready just yet. The garden plots likely won't be open until this fall.

But you can find out more about the program, give your suggestions and sign up on a list of potential gardeners at Lynch Wood's Family Fun Night 5:30-6:30 p.m. Friday, May 19.

Centennial School District, in partnership with Portland Parks & Recreation's Community Gardens Program, will convert 30,000-square-feet of unused lawn into garden plots that will provide space for at least 50 families to grow food.

The $80,000 funding for the project comes from a variety of sources including Portland Parks and the Richard and Helen Phillips Charitable Fund.

The PP&R Community Gardens program has provided gardening opportunities for the benefit of the people and neighborhoods of Portland since 1975. In addition to the new Lynch Wood Garden, there are 51 other community gardens located throughout the city, developed and operated by volunteers and PP&R staff.

Like other gardens, the plots at Lynch Wood will be assigned on a first-come, first-served basis. For gardens with no waitlist and plots available, the plot assignment process typically takes two or three weeks, PP&R said. If no plots are available, you will be put on a waitlist and notified when one becomes available.
