A pedestrian was killed by a hit and run driver late Thursday night in Southeast Portland and the suspected driver turned himself into the Portland Police Bureau early Friday morning, police said.
Police identified the victim as 37-year-old Corey Deshawn Simmons.
The suspected driver, Israel Aldama-Sanchez, 23, was booked into the Multnomah County Jail on charges of criminally negligent homicide and failure to perform the duties of a driver.
Aldama-Sanchez will be arraigned on Monday in Multnomah County Court, the police said.
East Precinct officers responded to a 911 call about a pedestrian hit by a driver at Southeast 148th Avenue and Stark Street at 11:19 p.m. Thursday March 9. The caller reported that the driver fled the area in a dark-colored vehicle.
Officers and medical personnel arrived and located the dead man and saw evidence of a vehicle collision.
The PPB's traffic investigators said the suspect was driving westbound on Stark Street approaching 148th Avenue when he struck the victim then turned left onto 148th Avenue, leaving the scene.
