First-grade students at Wilkes Elementary School delivered Valentine's Day greetings and sang songs for residents at Cherry Park Plaza senior living community, 1323 S.W. Cherry Park Road, Troutdale, on the holiday, Tuesday, Feb. 14.

CONTRIBUTED PHOTO - Cherry Park Plaza residents got gussied up for the Valentine's party with Wilkes Elementary students. This woman even had heart earrings. The Cherry Park residents "loved it. They had a great time," said Wilkes music teacher Sarah Koharchick.

The students sang familiar songs, with the lyrics changed up a bit for Valentine's Day, including "If You Love Me and You Know It" and "H-E-A-R-T," the latter to the familiar tune of "B-I-N-G-O," among other tunes.

"It's nice to be able to give them an opportunity to perform in public," said Koharchick, adding that some of the students had never been on a field trip or even ridden a bus.

Each child made a Valentine's Day card and distributed them to a resident.

The field trip was paid for by FedEx Ground, which has a major facility in Troutdale.

Koharchick already has plans for next year.

"We have plans to bring books next year so they can read to each other and spend a little more time," she said. CONTRIBUTED PHOTO - Two party-goers have a heart-to-heart on Valentine's Day. CONTRIBUTED PHOTO - Wilkes students show off their best Valentine's Day smiles.
