Filing deadline nears for Damascus mayor and council seats

The deadline to run for mayor or City Council in Damascus is less than three weeks away. The mayor and three council seats expire at the end of 2014, and candidates have until Aug. 26 to file to get on the November ballot.

So far, the only person who has filed to be on the ballot is Councilor Randy Shannon, whose seat expires at the end of the year and who is running for mayor. Mayor Steve Spinnett has not indicated whether he plans to seek a third term.

The council seats of Dan Tomlinson, who was appointed to replace Mary Wescott, and Council President Andrew Jackman also expire at the end of the year. Damascus has no term limits, said city spokesman Todd Loggan.

The City Council will interview candidates Aug. 14 to fill a fourth seat, that of Councilor Mel O'Brien, who resigned earlier this year. An appointment is expected soon, Loggan said.

Loggan says he's not worried because more people haven't filed yet to get on the November ballot.

“I imagine we'll get a late run,” he said. “That's pretty typical.”

Anyone who wants to run for one of the Damascus seats can visit the city's website at www.ci.damascus.or.us or pick up a candidate packet at Damascus City Hall, 19920 S.E. Highway 202.
