Portland Lutheran School hosts open house, benefit

From 4-7 p.m. Wednesday, April 23, Portland Lutheran School will hold an open house at 740 S.E. 182nd Ave., Gresham.

The Christian school offers pre-K through eighth grade, with a college preparatory high school.

Faculty, coaches and students will be available to answer questions and lead families of tours through classrooms. The open house also will offer information on admissions and financial assistance.

The school also will hold its “Blessed to Bid” dinner and auction at 6 p.m. Saturday, April 26, at McMenamins Edgefield Ballroom, 2126 S.W. Halsey St. in Troutdale.

The evening will include a plated dinner, two complimentary drinks and live music. Seating will be limited to 100 people. Gresham High hosts choral Spaghetti Sing and Auction

The Gresham High School choral department will host its Spaghetti Sing and Auction from 5:30-8:30 p.m. Friday, April 11, at the Gresham High School cafeteria, 1200 N. Main Ave.

The biggest choir fundraiser of the year will feature a spread of spaghetti, salad and bread.

Tickets are $6 for adults and teens, $4 for children and free for kids 2 and younger.

Entertainment will be provided by Gresham High choirs. The evening will include a cake auction and themed basket auction.

Reyes is state Poetry Out Loud winner

For the second year in a row, Rosie Reyes of Gresham’s Center for Advanced Learning is the Oregon Poetry Out Loud state champion.Reyes, an 18-year-old senior, was one of nine regional finalists who competed in Saturday’s state Poetry Out Loud contest at Willamette University.

She advances to the national Poetry Out Loud competition, scheduled for April 29-30 in Washington, D.C. Maxwell Romprey of West Salem High School was named Oregon’s runner-up; Oregon Poet Laureate Paulann Petersen was one of the judges.

Poetry Out Loud is a national recitation contest for high school students, organized in Oregon by the Oregon Arts Commission in collaboration with the National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation. Participants memorize and present poems, practicing public speaking skills while exploring the complexity of poetry.

In 2014 more than 365,000 students, 2,300 schools and 8,800 teachers participated in Poetry Out Loud nationwide.

Coakley joins Centennial School District

The Centennial School District has announced the hiring of Paul E. Coakley, Ed.D. as the district’s assistant superintendent and director of human resources.

He will replace Rich Shultz, who retires June 30.

“We are excited that Dr. Coakley will be joining our team,” Superintendent Sam Breyer said in a news release. “Paul has worked in both large and small districts and is a proven leader in working with school staff on research-based instructional strategies to improve teaching and learning. He is a collaborative leader who builds strong relationships with staff, students and community and is a great addition to Centennial.”

Currently the assistant superintendent and elementary school principal in the Rainer School District, Coakley began his career in 2000 as an elementary teacher at Dr. Martin Luther King Elementary School in Portland, where he also worked as a literacy coach.

He served as the student services coordinator at Dr. Howard Elementary School in Champaign, Ill., and the student management specialist/administrator at Beach School in Portland. He joined the Rainier School District in 2008.

Coakley attended elementary and high school in Gresham, and is a graduate of Portland State University, where he received his bachelor’s, master’s and doctorate degrees.

He is the board chairman for the Lewis & Clark Graduate School’s Educational Consortium. His first day in the Centennial School District will be July 1.
