Sigala returns to head up MHCC Foundation

Al Sigala, the former director of media and public relations at Mt. Hood Community College, has been named executive director of the MHCC Foundation.

Sigala worked at the college in his previous role from 1997 to 2009. Most recently, he was vice president of community relations and diversity programs for Big Brothers Big Sisters Columbia Northwest.

“I’m extremely excited to come back home to MHCC and reunite with my former colleagues and meet new ones,” Sigala said in a statement released via email. “As a former community college student, I have always held close to my heart MHCC’s mission to transform lives and build communities. It is with great enthusiasm that I return to serve the college, our students and our community in efforts to create a greater tomorrow for all.”

In addition to hiring Sigala, the foundation has undergone other changes to enhance the college’s ability to invest in the future, said Debbie Derr, MHCC president. The foundation, which now also includes grant-writing, is relocating in person and in reporting structure from the Office of College Advancement to the President’s Office. Sigala will serve as the foundation’s chief fundraiser and will work closely with Sunny Klever, foundation manager.

The foundation is a nonprofit organization established in 1969 to receive, hold and disburse private funds in support of the educational programs and students of Mt. Hood Community College.

Its mission is to be “a unifying force providing resources vital to quality education and community life.”

In the past year, the foundation provided more than $228,000 in student scholarships, equipment and support for college programs and departments. For more information, visit mhcc.edu/foundation.

Save the date — April 26

The foundation’s annual auction and dinner will be held April 26 at the Red Lion Hotel on the River, 909 N. Hayden Island Drive, Portland. The 1950s-themed evening (“Shake, Rattle & Roll”) will include dancing to music by Johnny Limbo & the Lugnuts, bidding on trips, artwork and gift baskets, and a full meal. What could be more fun and rewarding than raising money for scholarships for MHCC students? For reservations, visit mhcc.edu/foundation or call 503-491-7206.
