Fairview landscape architect earns national fellowship

Mike Abbaté is director of Portland Parks and Rec

Mike AbbatéA Fairview resident has recently received a prestigious fellowship from the American Society of Landscape Architects at the society’s national conference in Boston.

Mike Abbaté, Portland Parks & Recreation Director and longtime landscape architect is one of 33 ASLA members elevated to its Council of Fellows for 2013.

Abbaté has lived in Fairview since 2007 and was previously Gresham's Urban Design & Planning Director for 3 years.

“As a landscape architect, it is so easy to love living in a place like Fairview, with the Gorge and Mount Hood right next door,” says Abbaté. “This is the perfect place to engage in this fulfilling life’s work.”

The fellowship is among the highest honors the American Society of Landscape Architects bestows on members.

“This award recognizes a landscape architect’s significant achievements and contributions during their career,” said Parks Commissioner Amanda Fritz.

To be a designated a Fellow, landscape architects must be full members of ASLA who are in good standing for at least ten years and must be recommended by their local chapter.

Abbaté received his nomination for Leadership and Management from the Oregon Chapter.

Mark Ross, Portland Parks and Recreation spokesman, said Abbaté's 28-year career in the Pacific Northwest has cycled between the private and public sectors, but his commitment to excellence in design, management, sustainability, and spirituality has remained steadfast.

“These principles have guided him from designing public spaces to his current position as the director of Portland Parks and Recreation,” Ross said.

Abbaté received his bachelor of science degree in Landscape Architecture from Cal Poly Ponoma.

He is also the author of “Gardening Eden: how creation care will change your faith, your life and our world,” published by Random House.
