Applications open for community award

Students in grades fifth through 12th who have made a difference volunteering over the past year could win $1,000 and a trip to Washington, D.C., next May.

The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards honors outstanding community service.

The 2014 application is due Tuesday, Nov. 5, and must be submitted by a school principal or the head of an officially designated local organization by the last week of October.

These organizations include Girl Scouts, county 4-H organizations, America Red Cross chapters, YMCA and Affiliates of HandsOn Network.

A fair for student veterans

Mt. Hood Community College will host a veterans fair from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 12, in Vista Dining Center, Room AC2000.

Sponsored by MHCC Veteran Services, WorkSource, Gresham United Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 180 and a number of employers, the fair will feature information and guidance for veterans about their careers and GI Bill benefits.

Employers seeking to hire veterans will include banks, healthcare organizations, manufacturers, retail grocers and transportation representatives.
