Golf event aims high, reaches goal

This year's Dennis’ 7 Dees Charity Golf Tournament on Thursday, Sept. 12, raised $100,402 for Human Solutions, a Gresham-based nonprofit organization that provides housing and other services for homeless and low-income families in East Portland and East Multnomah County.

That's 75 percent more than was raised from last year's event, which brought in $57,000.

"We were very proud of our efforts in 2012, but when we heard about the lack of funds for the Family Winter Shelter, we just decided to up the ante," said Dave Snodgrass, president of Dennis' 7 Dees Landscaping and Garden Centers.

And by upping the ante, he means Dennis' 7 Dees set a goal of raising $100,000 with this year's event.

With that goal met, the family winter shelter in outer Northeast Portland will be able to stay open an extra month. It was scheduled to be open from Nov. 1 through March, but funds from the golf tournament will allow it to remain open through April.

"None of this would have been possible without the partnership between Human Solutions and Dennis' 7 Dees," said Human Solutions Executive Director Jean DeMaster. "It is a model of how much can be accomplished, in a community, when two small organizations have big goals with great determination."
