Late-night shooting leaves one dead
Victim identified as 37-year-old Gresham man
The man killed in a late-night shooting in Gresham has been identified as Gresham resident Makeitho "Tito" De Monz Herring, 37.
He was shot shortly before 11 p.m. Monday, Sept. 9, said Detective John Rasmussen, a Gresham Police spokesman. Police found him unconscious and not breathing in the northeastern part of the parking lot at the Pine Square Apartments in the 700 block of Northeast 178th Avenue. The man appeared to have been shot and was pronounced dead at the scene.
East County's Major Crimes Team is investigating the shooting as a homicide. "Although the identity of the shooter is not known, the initial investigation suggests Herring may have been familiar with the person who shot him," Rasmussen said. "This case does not appear to be gang related or tied to any other recent gang incidents in the surrounding area."
Herring has a criminal record in Multnomah County and was most recently arrested last year for violating his parole on a second-degree assault conviction, according to jail records.
Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call the Gresham police tip line at 503-618-2719 or 888-989-3505.
