Legislators, safety officers offer town hall

Reps. Jessica Vega Pederson, D-East Portland; Jeff Reardon, D-East Portland/Happy Valley; and Shemia Fagan, D-North Clackamas/East Multnomah, are hosting a pedestrian and public safety town hall to coincide with the start of the school year, focusing on Centennial and David Douglas school districts.

The town hall will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 7, at Immigrant and Refugee Community Organization (IRCO), 10301 N.E. Glisan St., Portland.

Scramble for students

The Gresham-Barlow Education Foundation will hold a benefit golf tournament, Scramble for Students, Monday, Sept. 23, at Persimmon Country Club.

Check-in begins at 10 a.m. with a shotgun start at noon. The event includes a barbecue dinner and awards ceremony.

MHCC offers new student orientation

New students, transfer students and restarting students are invited to Mt. Hood Community College’s 10th annual new student orientation 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 19, in the school gym.

Participants receive a flash drive and drawstring backpack, in addition to a free lunch. Participants also have a chance to win free tuition for winter term and other door prizes.

Gresham student represents county at spelling championship

Cheyenne Howatt of Gresham is one of two students who represented Multnomah County this year at the Oregon Statewide Spelling Championship, held at the Oregon State Fair 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 31. The event was broken into three divisions, elementary, middle and high school.
