Concert benefits My Sister’s House

A concert benefiting My Sister’s House, a nonprofit ministry in East County, will be held 7-9 p.m. Friday, Sept. 27, at Gresham United Methodist Church, 620 N.W. Eighth St.

The concert, emceed by former Gresham Police Chief Carla Piluso, will feature pianist Sally Harmon and bass player Frank Gruner.

Tickets are $15 at the door. Along with a concert, there will be a raffle.

My Sister’s House is a safe home that provides shelter, education opportunities and assisted childcare for women and children in transition.

Middle Eastern Festival reaches 36th year

Saint George Antiochian Orthodox Christian Church will hold its 36th annual Middle Eastern Festival from noon to 7 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 8, at 20101 N.E. 162nd at St. George St.

Throughout the afternoon, the church will offer tours, entertainment, a children’s tent with games and activities, vendors and a silent auction.

Cappella Romana, a world-renowned choral group, will perform two free mini concerts at 2 p.m. and 4:30 p.m., and an evening vespers prayer is set for 6 p.m.

There is no charge for admission. Tokens for food items will be available at the door.

Commemorate the 1963 March on Washington

On Saturday, Aug. 24, faith, political and social justice organizations will gather for a march and rally to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the historic March on Washington, at South Waterfront Park.

The event will begin at 10 a.m. at Terry Schrunk Plaza, across from Portland City Hall, with participants marching to South Waterfront Park, where the rally, speakers and music will begin at 1 p.m.

The event is sponsored by Albina Ministerial Alliance Coalition for Justice and Police Reform, Urban League of Portland, NAACP of Portland, ACLU of Portland, Ecumenical Ministries of Oregon and several other labor and community-based organizations.
